Recipe: Dang Gui Soup

Slightly bitter and sweet with a somewhat earthy taste, this delicious soup is a great immune booster. Older people with weaker immune systems might drink a cup every day, but it can also be served as a side-dish to a regular meal.


  • Nourish Defensive Qi (Immune System)
  • Preserve Yin & Fluids


  • Ox Tail 200g (about two pieces)
  • Huang Qi (Astragalus):    18g
  • Dang Gui (Angelica):    9g
  • Gou Qi (Wolfberry):    9g
  • Dang Shen (Codonopsis):    9g
  • Shu Di (cooked Rehmania):    9g


  1. Rinse herbs and soak in 4 cups for 15 minutes or more. Add ox tail.

  2. Bring to a boil under high heat; reduce heat and simmer for 45 minutes or until reduced to 3 cups

  3. Pour off soup into a container, add another four cups of water to herbs and repeat step 2.

  4. Combine first and second boilings to even concentrations. You should have 6-7 cups total.

  5. Refrigerate unused portion. It will be good for up to 2 weeks.

Do not take when pregnant or nursing. Avoid if you have a cold with high fever

Herbs Used

Huang Qi (Astragalus)is a strong immune booster.

Dang Gui (Angelica) nourishes blood and promotes blood circulation

Gou Qi (Wolfberry) is generally nourishing.

Dang Shen (Dang Shen), known as the "poor man's ginseng," boosts the digestive and respiratory systems.

Shu Di (Cooked Rehmania) nourishes blood. If you have a warm constitution, then omit or replace with Sheng Di (Raw Rehmanai).
